About Schnelle Acevedo

My Story

From Brooklyn Streets to Digital Spaces

I'm Schnelle Acevedo, born and raised in Brooklyn, New York—a place that taught me hustle, community, and the power of showing up authentically. My journey into digital literacy education wasn't a straight line, but looking back, every step makes perfect sense.

It started in my kitchen, testing one-pot recipes at 5 AM before the kids woke up, dreaming up ways to make family life easier for busy moms like me. I launched BrooklynActiveMama.com as a passion project—a place to share recipes, parenting tips, and real talk about juggling it all. What I didn't expect was how quickly I'd fall in love with the digital side of things: understanding how search engines work, figuring out why some content resonates while other posts flop, and cracking the code on building an online community.

Over 14 years, I grew Brooklyn Active Mama from a small personal blog into a platform attracting over 500,000 visitors monthly. But more importantly, I developed a deep understanding of what makes digital platforms work—and what holds people back from using them confidently.

The Digital Divide I Witnessed

As I built my own digital presence, I watched countless talented entrepreneurs, particularly Black women in my community, struggle with the same challenges I'd faced. They had brilliant ideas, incredible services, and authentic voices—but technology felt like an insurmountable barrier.

I saw seniors wanting to stay connected with grandchildren but intimidated by smartphones. I met educators passionate about teaching but overwhelmed by the digital tools they were expected to master overnight. I connected with parents worried about keeping their kids safe online but unsure where to start.

The common thread? These weren't technology problems—they were digital literacy gaps. People didn't need fancier tools; they needed someone to help them understand the tools they already had.

Finding My Purpose

That's when my mission became clear. Armed with my Master's in Public Administration, I've learned how to translate complex systems into accessible information. I became a certified M/WBE (Minority/Women-owned Business Enterprise) and founded BAM Digital Media LLC with one goal: to bridge the digital literacy gap for underserved communities.

I don't just teach people what buttons to click—I help them understand why those buttons matter, how platforms really work, and how to make informed decisions about their digital presence. Because true confidence comes from understanding, not just following instructions.

What I Believe

Digital Literacy is a Civil Right

In 2025, digital literacy isn't optional—it's essential for economic opportunity, civic participation, and staying connected with the people we love. Yet too many communities are left behind, not because they lack intelligence or capability, but because technology education isn't designed with them in mind.

I believe everyone deserves:

  • Patient, jargon-free guidance that meets them where they are
  • Understanding, not just instructions so they can adapt as technology evolves
  • Culturally responsive teaching that honors their experiences and communication styles
  • Practical skills they can use immediately to improve their lives or businesses
  • A teacher who sees their potential not their perceived limitations

Technology Should Serve You, Not Overwhelm You

Too often, people feel like they're failing at technology when really, technology is failing them. Platforms change features without warning. Tutorials assume knowledge you don't have. Help resources use language that feels designed to confuse.

I'm here to flip that script. Technology should make your life easier, your business stronger, and your goals more achievable. When it doesn't, we figure out why together and find solutions that actually work for you.

My Approach

How I Teach Differently

I Start Where You Are
No judgment, no assumptions. Whether you're a complete beginner or have some experience, we begin with an honest assessment of your current skills and build from there.

I Explain the Why
Anyone can tell you to "post three times a week" or "use these hashtags." I explain why frequency matters, how algorithms actually work, and what hashtags do so you can make strategic decisions yourself.

I Build Real Confidence
My goal isn't to make you dependent on me—it's to give you the knowledge and confidence to navigate digital spaces independently. I measure success by your ability to problem-solve on your own.

I Keep It Real
I share what worked for me, what flopped spectacularly, and what I learned along the way. You'll get honest guidance, not sugar-coated promises or one-size-fits-all solutions.

I Honor Your Authenticity
Your digital presence should reflect who you really are, not who some algorithm says you should be. I help you use technology in ways that align with your values and goals.

Why Representation Matters

The Brooklyn in Me

Brooklyn isn't just where I'm from—it's who I am. It taught me that community matters, authenticity wins, and you can achieve anything if you're willing to work for it and lift others as you climb.

When I'm not teaching digital literacy or creating content, you'll find me:

  • Testing new recipes in my kitchen (still love those one-pot meals!)
  • Exploring Brooklyn neighborhoods and supporting local businesses
  • Spending time with family—the reason I started this journey
  • Reading about education equity, digital rights, and community development
  • Finding new ways to make technology more accessible for everyone

Why Representation Matters

As a Black woman in tech and entrepreneurship, I know firsthand how important it is to see someone who looks like you succeeding in spaces where you've been told you don't belong. That's why representation isn't just a buzzword for me—it's a responsibility I take seriously.

When I teach, I bring my whole self: my Brooklyn roots, my experiences navigating systems that weren't built for me, and my commitment to making sure the next generation has an easier path than I did.

My Vision

Creating Digital Equity, One Person at a Time

I envision a world where:

  • Digital literacy education is accessible to everyone, regardless of age, income, or background
  • Technology empowers rather than excludes underserved communities
  • Black women entrepreneurs have the skills and confidence to build thriving online businesses
  • Seniors can navigate digital spaces with independence and dignity
  • Parents can guide their children's technology use with knowledge, not fear
  • Educators feel confident integrating technology into their teaching

Through BAM Digital Media LLC, my courses, workshops, and one-on-one coaching, I'm working to make that vision a reality—one learner, one community, one breakthrough at a time.
